The United States Industrial Alcohol Company argued sabotage, claiming anarchists had bombed the tank, a theory investigators dismissed quickly. The evidence pointed instead to shortcuts and cost-saving measures, including the revelation that the tank had never undergone a basic water test before being filled with molasses. In 1925, the company was found liable and ordered to pay nearly $1 million in damages, the equivalent of tens of millions today.
